If you are considering making the shift to a vegetarian lifestyle it is better to do it gradually, in stages. Of course the ultimate goal is to eliminate red meat from your diet altogether. In this way you are getting rid of the biggest offender of all when it comes to diseases of the digestive system and many other body functions.

Apart from lowering your cholesterol or blood pressure, you may reduce your risk of cancers including colon, breast, ovarian and prostate cancer. All of these cancers have been linked in studies to western style meat-based diets. Vegetarians avoid animal fat linked to these cancers.

Of course, another benefit of a vegetarian diet is the abundance of fiber, vitamins and antioxidants found in fruits, vegetables, legumes and nuts which help in the prevention of certain cancers and also create a healthy digestive system. It has also been found that there are higher levels of “natural killer cells,” (specialized white blood cells that attack cancer cells) in people that follow a vegetarian lifestyle.

In order to make the change to a healthier way of life through vegetarianism you will need to educate yourself on the foods you will be including in your new meals. As mentioned previously, the vegetarian meals will have to be introduced gradually. Planning and preparing your new meals will be an exciting experience for you as you will be serving meals that are wholesome, delicious and life prolonging. The whole family will soon discover that their new eating habits will have them feeling more healthier and more energized.

Most vegetarians who are serious about their eating habits have also eliminated poultry from their diet. Vegetarians feel strongly about the way chickens are kept in horrible, crampted and inhumane conditions and laden with hormones and antibiotics making them taste nothing like chicken should taste with very little nutritional value.

There is an enormous amount of information available on the benefits of vegetarianism and the benefits associated with this lifestyle but now it’s up to you to get the ball rolling by experimenting with a variety of recipes you have discovered in your research.

Remember, you are creating for yourself and your family, a new lifestyle and new eating habits that will be a healthy and life prolonging experience.

Many people out there want to eat a healthier diet but they are afraid of giving up certain foods. We hear all of the time about the numerous health benefits we could obtain by becoming vegetarian. However, many of us don’t want to completely give up meat. There are those few moments of weakness where we just have to have that turkey burger or that chicken salad. Well, some good news for those of us who want to reap certain vegetarian benefits without giving up meat completely comes from a little diet known as part-time vegetarian.

When you are a part-time vegetarian, you try not to consume any meat for at least 3 days out of the week. On those days you create meals that are strictly vegetarian and rich in vegetables and other non-animal nutrients. Even though you may not be a pure vegetarian, studies show that even a part time vegetarian reaps valuable health benefits.

By becoming a part time vegetarian, you not only cut your food cost in half, but you also reduce your saturated fat intake, reduce your cholesterol intake, and reduce your calorie intake. After just a few weeks you begin to feel healthier, lighter and more energized. The reason for the increase in energy is due to the increase in valuable nutrients. By consuming more fruit and veggies on your vegetarian days, you increase your intake of vitamins, potassium, fiber, beta carotene, and lycopene, to name a few. All of these nutrients are extremely beneficial to your overall health. Each compound plays an important role in your body. Just as an example, a diet rich in fiber helps with numerous aspects of the digestive track. So if you want to improve your health and energy, try becoming a part time vegetarian.

After years of habit and eating a diet of particular foods, many of us realise that we have been unaware of the full range of quality food that is now available to us if we are willing to explore and make room for some changes. In agriculture there have been spectacular improvements. Over the years, there are changes in the markets with advancement not only in the quality of food offered but in an immense variety that was not existent 50 years or even 20 years ago. This is particularly obvious in the large range of fine fruits, vegetables, nuts and grains that confront us when we are making our choices.

Each of us insists on our personal freedom to eat whatever we decide for ourselves. And it is usually our sense of taste which dictates our primary selection although we all know that to keep healthy, both our bodies and our brains require a considerable variety of foods.

Individual selection and taste determines choice over and above the advertisers’ power to pressure consumers. There is no way a consumer need take any food into the body other than good food, once he has determined to discriminate before making that selection. However, many people still fall victim of the ‘fast food’ industry and suffer for it.

There is no doubt that nutritionists all agree that a natural healthy diet should consist of an abundance of fresh fruits, salads, nuts and grains and a smaller proportion of dairy products, fish and meat.

Some go further to ensure that the meats they eat are guaranteed kosher and are free of the adrenalin which the unfortunate animals pump into their bodies in their fear before being killed in the abattoirs.

Vegetarian choose not to eat meat at all. They are usually animal lovers and by their choice of food, demonstrate their sincere affection by not eating flesh foods at all. They find the idea one that makes them recoil, just as it is usual for most people to recoil at the thought of eating their pet animal.

So some vegetarians choose not to eat meat because they love animals intensely and believe it is a matter of principle that humans reduce killing other creatures in order to subsist.

Some have witnessed the intensely barbaric killing of animals and poultry in the commercial killing houses and are shocked into reconsidering the actions in the kind of animal husbandry that ends this way.

Some have studied animal health and methods of commercial production and conclude that modern methods of inoculation and drenching are not logically producing the best quality food for humans. Contamination is now recognized in the market which now hears increasing demands for ‘organic’ meat products. However, animals also get sick, like humans and there are many diseases that are not known to the public but which plague the creatures. Only the healthiest animals are supposed to be selected for slaughter for human food. The criteria for second grade meat must be questioned although it is known that a great quantity is used in producing pet food to feed in turn to our pets.

Many vegetarians would argue that to go directly to the green source of food rather than through the secondary channel of an animal’s body is likely to avoid many serious diseases that are transmitted through the animal food chain, particularly now with many exotic diseases becoming evident.

As food builds our body – it is our choice of food that determines the quality of its structure and its efficiency in physiological processes. So when choosing a food we naturally consider ‘do I want to build my body out of this material?” We have a contrasting selection that ranges from the fresh crunch of an apple, to the recently slaughtered animal steak; from a fresh pineapple juice to a fizzy coca cola drink; from a crisp green lettuce to a vegetable stew and so on. We build and maintain our bodies out of the material we select in our diet. As our food creates the energy that we need for an active life, we must think of it also as a body fuel, more important than the fuel we need for our motor cars. What are the foods that will provide us with the finest quality, high performance energy? This consideration will also affect our choices.

But where it is rational to consider nutrition from various viewpoints, we have a hurdle that is our greatest handicap and that is our particular enjoyment of taste sensation. Our taste buds are able to permit poor quality food to be eaten even if it is not going to give us the health and vitality we want. We become slaves to our palate if we don’t consciously cultivate our tastes and appetites to match the results we want. The reactions will be inevitable We eat unwholesome food – we become ill, either now or later. We eat wholesome food – we are healthy and are likely to remain so. Eating proper food is becoming realised as our basic and most potent ‘life insurance’ responsibility.

Enjoyment of food is one of the health principles that determines good digestion. It is therefore obvious that each of us will remember this rule very easily. But all the other rules of nutrition must be remembered and applied also and this information is readily available.

The vegetarian chooses to enjoy a diet of fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains, seaweed, sprouts, herbs and should also be seeking a balanced diet with limited eggs and dairy products, refined foods and with an introduction of seaweeds . Such are known as lacto-vegetarians. Those who do not eat anything other than fruits and nuts are known as vegans. The three types however, share the common principle of no flesh foods at all.

It is no wonder that those who choose vegetables will be more familiar with the full range of vegetables that are available and will know better how to prepare them for enjoyment. They will be more adventurous than others who are not so dependent upon them in their diet. So they will enjoy more of the different colours, varieties and flavours also. This applies to all the nutritional avenues open to a vegetarian once they omit meat from their diet. It also answers those who suggest that a vegetarian diet is boring and tasteless without meat.

As there is no accounting for individual taste we are all free to comment on food as we find it, pleasant of unpleasant. But having lived more than 50 years happily and healthily as a vegetarian it must be that personal results tell their story – and this is a rule which applies throughout.

There is no way to persuade another person – each must select food for themselves. Only is it possible to encourage you to think about the food you eat and consider if your nutrition can be expected to give you’re the results in the good health and well being you want.

Once the decision has been made to change to a vegetarian way of life, you will have the opportunity to enjoy a variety of wonderful, nutritious and healthy meals that the whole family will appreciate and enjoy. Any of the old habits of including meat will soon be a thing of the past. With some creativity on your part, you will be surprised how much variety you can achieve with your vegetarian meals.

By educating yourself on the plethora of vegetarian recipes available you will soon become the expert and will be able to pass this knowledge on to the people you care most about.

These new eating habits will last a lifetime for you and your family, by including a wide variety of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes and soy products. It is much easier to make a nutritious meal from these foods than from animal products which contain saturated fat, cholesterol, and other substances that your body can do without.

Plant foods provide nutrients such as fiber, vitamins, minerals and healthy fats that supply energy to the body to lessen the feelings of fatigue and tiredness. A vegetarian diet also eliminates the harmful bacteria and toxins from accumulating in your body and before long your digestive system will start to work better.

High protein animal based foods are not necessary as different varieties of grains, beans, vegetables and fruit contain plenty of protein making protein deficiency very unlikely.

The complex carbohydrates found in whole grains, beans, and vegetables provide the energy to fuel a busy lifestyle. A good way to introduce beans to your meals is to use them in your favorite meals such as casseroles as a substitute for meat.

Many of your favorite Mexican and Italian meals require slight changes to easily be converted to vegetarian dishes. Others include pasta, burritos, tacos, pizzas, stir-frys, and many more. Once you’ve mastered the art of vegetarian preparation it’s possible the family will not only find these meals delicious, they’ll be wondering why it’s taken so long to discover this healthy and nutritious way of eating.

It’s up to you now to start thinking about the lifestyle change you are about to embark on. You owe it to yourself and your loved ones to learn as much as possible, as soon as possible, about the variety of ways to prepare and present your new vegetarian meals.

If you are a vegetarian, then you know how difficult it is to come up delicious meals that your whole family can enjoy. The average American eats meat every single day, and it is hard to compete with that craving of heavy flesh that is inherent in people. However, you can wow your family and friends with a few of my favorite vegetarian dishes, which are not only delicious, but extremely healthy.

For today’s meal, we will discuss making two main courses of vegetarian Pad Thai, with a side of stuffed peppers, finishing with carob chocolate chip cookies. This meal is designed for four to six people, with a variety of foods, tastes, and diets. It is always important to have something everyone will like, so no one will leave the table with an empty belly.

First let’s talk about the Pad Thai. To create this meal you will need, rice noodles, garlic, a red bell pepper, 2 tomatoes, snow peas, tofu, soy sauce, lime juice, cilantro, cashews, scallions, and fresh bean sprouts. To create this sumptuous meal, you may need to buy a large wok, or just use a maneuverable frying pan in which you can evenly cook all the ingredients. Cook the noodles separately and stir consistently so that they do not stick together. Use the wok to stir-fry your ingredients and tofu for about 4 minutes, or until everything is well cooked. Put the two together, adding your soy sauce, lime juice, cashews, and the rest of the toppings, and voile, your vegetarian Pad Thai is finished. This meal only has about 300 calories per severing, and only one gram of saturated fat.

Stuffed peppers are a particular favorite of mine, because it is a dish found all over the world in so many different cultures. To create this dish for your family you need “veggie ground round”, 3 bell peppers, orange or yellow, olive tomato sauce, an onion, garlic, a cup of already cooked rice, olive oil, and dried oregano. Cook your rice, onions, and garlic for about 5 minutes, then add in the veggie ground round and the oregano. Prepare your peppers by slicing them in half. Stuff your cooking mixture into each pepper half, and place them into the oven. Cook for twenty to twenty-five minutes and then serve hot.

For dessert, cookies are always a good option. Pick your favorite chocolate cookie recipe, use no fat butter, or oil for substitute, and then use carob chips. These only have 50 calories per cookie, which mean they are an innocent dessert for your diet!

When you’re making food choices at the supermarket do you ever consider the consequences it will have on your well being and lifestyle? Have you really thought about it? Your quality of life in the future will depend on the choices you have made to-day.

All healthy diets are low fat, low cholesterol and high fiber – which makes a vegetarian diet an outstanding option for improving the health of your heart.

The well known saying “we become what we eat” is more than just words, as it has been proven over and over again, that healthy people eat healthy foods.

When we make the switch from eating meat to a vegetarian-based diet, our cholesterol improves, our body fat reduces, we are less prone to many types of cancers, the chances of contracting diabetes reduces, our blood pressure falls into the normal and generally, our overall health and fitness improves.

If you have a family history of high cholesterol or high blood pressure, then it’s particularly incumbent on you to revise your eating habits. Moving towards a more vegetarian diet has been shown statistically to reduce the incidence of so many of the diseases of industrialized countries. Vegetarians are statistically healthier than omnivorous persons; they’re leaner and live longer.

Vegetarians avoid fast foods at all costs. Have you ever seen an example of your blood plasma after eating a fast food hamburger? What was previously a clear liquid becomes cloudy with the fat and cholesterol that’s absorbed from eating a high-fat hamburger.

It’s time now for you to think about your health and your future. Do you want to be overweight, have less energy and simply feel sluggish and fat, or do you want to feel the way most vegetarians feel and look like with a longer anticipated lifespan? Isn’t it time to think about what you want to be and to eat accordingly by starting to-day on a vegetarian diet.

It’s never too late to change what you’re eating and increase your chances for a longer, fitter life. “If it is to be – it is up to me.”

As a parent it is your responsibility to pass on your knowledge on the benefits of a vegetarian lifestyle. You are convinced that a vegetarian diet will help control their weight, boost their energy levels and improve their health. Now you owe it to the rest of your family to pass on all you know about this improved way of eating to assist them to develop physically and mentally. You’ll be doing them a favor that will last them a lifetime.

In saying that, it won’t be easy to make immediate changes to their eating habits as it is difficult for them to resist the fast food restaurants where a “Happy Meal” looks much more inviting than any vegetarian meal no matter what health benefits it has. Although you know that a vegetarian diet helps fight against heart disease and obesity and that more than 300,000 Americans die each year from obesity related diseases, it takes a while to convince the next generation that healthy eating habits create healthy, energized people.

To overcome any resistance to the changes necessary to begin a vegetarian lifestyle, you have to start slowly for a smooth transition. Start out by committing to preparing a vegetarian meal three days a week for the first two weeks by replacing ingredients in their favorite dishes to make them totally meatless.

Once you feel you are making good progress, commit to five days per week for the next two weeks. Now, all that’s left is to add two more days and you’ve done it. You’ve set up healthy, life prolonging eating habits that will be with them forever. Take pride in what you have accomplished.

You should not feel you are being preached at here, as you have already discovered the benefits of a healthy eating lifestyle compared to a meat-eating diet that is high in fat and cholesterol, deficient in carbohydrates and vitamins(except for B-complex). Plant based products are high in fiber and complex carbohydrates that reduce cholesterol levels thus reducing the risk of heart disease.

Vegetarian meals do not have to be boring and tasteless. To keep the family enjoying their new eating habits you will need to gain as much knowledge as possible to prepare a variety of scrumptious meat free meals that tantalize their taste buds.

It’s never too late for the whole family to get started on a healthier lifestyle and to start feeling fantastic all the time.

After eating meat and animal products your whole life, you may ask yourself why should I consider the change to a vegetarian lifestyle. For most of your life you have survived on eating eggs, hamburgers, hot dogs, poultry, so why change now?

To honestly answer this question you need to start by looking in the mirror. Is your weight at a healthy level compared to your height? Do you look and feel good about yourself? Are your energy levels where they should be or do you wake up tired and sluggish?

What you eat on a daily basis definitely has an effect on your general health, as well as your blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels and much more.

When you eat the correct foods that your body responds to, you should feel energized rather than tired and sluggish and feeling like you need a nap after a meal. How do you feel after eating? Food should nourish and feed the body and leave us energized and refreshed.

A delicious vegetarian meal, eliminating animal by-products will have your body running in peak condition like a well-oiled machine. It needs the right kind of fuel to run at peak efficiency, and when you’re eating high-fat meat, or meat that’s been fed antibiotics throughout its life, that’s simply not the kind of fuel the human body flourishes on.

If you are serious about your health why not try eating vegetarian for a set period. Your body will respond in a way you have not seen previously giving you extra energy, feeling more mentally acute and more physically fit. The change can make a big difference in your overall health and well-being.

To maximize the ‘healthy heart benefits’ of a vegetarian lifestyle for you and your loved ones you will need to master the art of cooking quality, mouthwatering, delicious meals that are easy to prepare and sumptuous to eat.

It has also been proven that sometimes, eating a vegetarian diet can help to cure these diseases. A vegetarian is also less likely to be overweight than a non-vegetarian.

There are three main reason why many people become vegetarians, these are because they do not agree with the way that animals are treated, they simply do not like the texture or taste of meat or because it contains a high amount of cholesterol. But many people become vegetarians for a whole array of different reasons.

Vegetarians eat much more antioxidants such as vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotenes and phytochemicals. Phytochemicals are components that are found in plants that help to prevent diseases. Antioxidants lower the chances of getting heart disease, cancer and other diseases.

Eating red meat can increase the risk of cancer of the breast and colon, or heart disease and strokes. It is proven that meat eaters have much higher rates of cancer than vegetarians.

It is recommended that a healthy diet should consist of getting 30% of total calories from fat and no more than 10% of total calories from saturated fat. 55% of total calories should come from complex carbohydrates such as vegetables, fruit, grains and cereals.

Studies show that some Americans eat five times as much protein as is recommended because they eat large amounts of meat. Excessive intake of protein can take calcium from the bones, which in effect can cause bone disorder.

It is important to get enough leafy vegetables that are high in antioxidants, which are good for overall health.

Listed below are some good reasons why a person should revert to being a vegetarian.

Vegetarians live longer

Eating more plant foods leaves less room for meat, which clogs up arteries

Plant foods are much higher in iron

Vegetarians have a lower risk of being diabetic

Food poisoning commonly starts from meat or poultry

There is a wider range of fruits and vegetables than there are animals

Eating a plant based diet guards the body against diseases

Vegetarians eat more fiber

Studies show that vegetarians are much calmer and spiritual than meat eaters

Vegetables, fruits, grains and nuts offer our bodies the nourishment that it needs

Vegetarians are more compassionate

Constipation is less likely in vegetarians

It is important to remember to:

Eat foods that are mainly from plant sources.

Do not eat too much salt or sugar.

Eat a minimum of six servings of grains, breads and pastas.

Eat a minimum of five servings of vegetables and fruits.

There are a wide variety of low calorie, vegetarian dishes available, which will benefit your body and make you a much healthier and happier person.

You’ve finally made the decision to change your eating habits and dive head first into a vegetarian lifestyle. Congratulations! You have made a wise decision. Now you have to decide whether to go ‘cold turkey’ or make the transition gradually. Whichever way to choose to start your vegetarian lifestyle, you can will notice the health benefits of vegetarianism more quickly by firstly significantly reducing the amount of meats consumed, and making vegetables, fruits, legumes, and whole grains the focus of your meals.

Take your time when shopping for food, plan ahead, and make sure you read food labels to ascertain information about food additives, food coloring and hidden animal ingredients. If you decide to eat dairy products, choose non-fat or low-fat varieties.

There is a wide variety of vegetarian foods available in most grocery stores, however, some of the more uncommon items may need to be sourced from one of the many specialty vegetarian food stores. Eat a wide variety of foods, and don’t be afraid to try vegetables, fruits, grains, breads, nuts, or seeds that you’ve never tried before. Convenient, ready-to-eat, whole-grain breakfast cereals, and quick-cooking whole-grain cereals such as oatmeal, whole-grain breads and crackers, such as rye, whole wheat, and mixed grain and other grains such as barley and bulgur wheat are readily available.

You should give consideration to the following foods:

Canned beans, such as pinto, black beans, and garbanzo beans

Rice (including brown, wild, etc.) and pasta (now available in whole wheat, spinach, and other flavors) with tomato sauce and canned beans and/or chopped veggies

Vegetarian soups like lentil, navy bean, or minestrone

A wide variety of plain frozen vegetables, and canned and frozen fruit

Fortified soymilks and soy cheeses, should you choose to not eat dairy

A wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, which should be the core of any diet

Once you have mastered the art of cooking delicious vegetarian meals you will soon realize that a meatless diet does not have to lack variety. As a matter of fact you will find it easy and fun to serve up such healthy, tasty and perhaps life prolonging meals that you and your family will thoroughly enjoy.

Weight loss tips for vegetarians are surprisingly similar to tips for any other kind of weight loss journey. There are three main types of vegetarians. “Vegans” eat no animal products at all. Vegan diets consist mainly of fruits, vegetables, legumes, grains, seeds, and nuts. “Lacto-vegetarians” add dairy products to their diets and “lacto-ovo vegetarians” include both dairy products and eggs.

Consider these facts about a vegetarian diet:

A typical vegetarian consumes 500 less calories a day than their meat-eating peers, while consuming more food.

Vegetarians tend to be slimmer with less medical problems such as heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes.

Evidence indicates that a vegetarian diet causes calories to burn long after meals, which means that foods from plants are being used as fuel instead of being stored as fat.

6% of the vegetarian population is considered “obese” compared to 45% of the meat-eating population.

Before you decide you want to become a vegetarian and throw out all the meat in your house, understand that becoming a vegetarian doesn’t automatically mean that you will lose weight! You can just imagine the calories packed into cheese, nuts, peanut butter, oils, creamy salad dressings, and sweets that can create havoc when you jump on the scale. Some vegetarian meals can be way too high in both fat and sugar. It’s all about making healthy choices.

As in all diets, you must be diligent about reading nutrition fact labels and knowing exactly what you are putting into your mouth.

Easy tips to help you lose weight on a vegetarian diet:

Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

Choose lower-fat dairy products that are fortified with calcium and vitamins.

Eat nutrient-dense foods that will provide the vitamins and minerals that you need daily.

Take a multi-vitamin daily.

Broil, steam, roast, or sauté your foods. Avoid fried foods.

Use the vegetarian food pyramid guidelines to determine the proper portions that you should be eating. As with any diet, success is all about portion control! Generally, each day vegetarians should have 5-8 servings of grains, 3-5 servings of vegetables, 2-4 servings of fruits, 2-3 servings of dairy products, and 5-7 ounces total of beans, nuts, eggs, etc.

Drink plenty of water.

Eliminate or reduce “recreational eating.” Don’t fill up on empty calories. Eat with intention! Making careless choices can cause your metabolism to slow down.

Beware of vegetarian “convenience food.” Plan your meals and snacks carefully.

Reduce your consumption of high-fat products such as mayonnaise, butter, and creamy salad dressings.

Keep a food journal to help you stay motivated on your weight loss journey.

Exercise a minimum of 30 minutes each day. More is better!

If you follow these easy steps, you will reduce your weight and improve your overall health. As always, see your physician before beginning a new diet and exercise routine.

If you are a vegetarian and a parent, you have probably thought about putting your child on a vegetarian diet. Not only would it save time by making meal planning easier, but for ethical reasons, you feel it is a better choice for your kids.

Or, you might not be a vegetarian yourself, but live with a child who is going through a vegetarian “phase,” where she rejects meat, but doesn’t consume enough healthy foods to make up for the nutritional gap.

No matter the reason, you have wondered whether a vegetarian diet is maintainable, and a healthy choice for your kids. You may have heard that putting your child on a vegetarian diet could potentially retard her growth.

These concerns probably stopped you from putting your child on a vegetarian diet up to now.

All of these concerns have merit. Obviously, if a vegetarian diet is not well planned, it can create serious short and long term health problems, especially for children, who are still developing–and who don’t yet have sufficient stores of vitamins.

If you are not prepared to put your family on a vegetarian diet plan, you probably shouldn’t. However, if you have done due diligence and you’re familiar with the nutritional detriments of vegetarians, then you are aware that these problems can easily be fixed with meal planning strategies.

You may also know that having your child on a healthy vegetarian diet could improve her health greatly in the short term and down the road. It would also reduce her consumption of animal products which contain hormones and preservatives, which are associated with cancer and various developmental problems.

Even if you haven’t finished researching vegetarian diets, but are ready to start your child on one now, you must begin by ensuring that you plan meals to increase amounts of the following nutrients (that most vegetarians lack):

Protein: Make sure your family is consuming enough protein by adding additional sources, such as wheat, soy beans, isolated soy protein, and nuts.

Calcium: Ensure your child is getting plenty of calcium by adding leafy green vegetables and calcium-fortified processed foods to his diet.

Iron: Make more iron part of your family’s diet by increasing servings of tofu and cereals, pinto and soy beans.

Zinc: Enhance your child’s zinc intake by increasing his servings of almonds, peanut butter, and mushrooms.

If you work on compensating for these common nutritional deficiencies, you absolutely can place your child on a vegetarian diet without any negative consequences.

Disregard the mythology on vegetarian diets and focus instead on research and meal-planning.

Vegetarianism is growing in popularity, and for many people, a vegetarian diet plan is their answer to healthy weight loss.

First, it is important to define what a vegetarian diet plan is. There are many different types of vegetarian diets. Some vegetarians eat only fruits, vegetables, nuts and beans. Others may also eat cheese and drink milk. Some may also eat eggs.

An obvious advantage of any vegetarian diet plan is that it is likely to be low in fat and cholesterol. Consequently, vegetarian diets can reduce the risk of heart disease and illnesses such as cancer and diabetes. Nevertheless, vegetarian diet plans can be deficient in important nutrients and you have to make sure you give your body enough vitamins, minerals, enzymes and other nutrients. Therefore, planning is very important. If you don’t ensure a balanced diet, you can become malnourished.

A particular benefit of a vegetarian diet plan is that it usually encourages a healthy serving of fruits and vegetables along with some whole grains. It can, however, be difficult to get enough protein in a vegetarian diet. Iron intake can also be inadequate. Spinach and Beans can provide the required iron and soy is high in protein content.

Vitamin and mineral supplementation may also be necessary to ensure adequate nutrition. The other alternative is to eat a lot of whole grain cereal, soy milk, broccoli and spinach. To lose weight using a vegetarian diet plan, you will still need to restrict high calorie foods.

The key to an effective vegetarian diet plan is variety. To get full nutritional benefit, you will need to eat a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. If you choose to eat dairy, make sure you limit your intake to non-fat or low-fat milk and cheese.

A vegetarian diet plan can be an excellent way to lose weight. Research has shown that vegetarians usually consume far fewer calories than meat eaters daily. Body mass index is usually lower for vegetarians. Nevertheless, vegetarians can still be overweight if they eat poorly. It is important to eat healthy and to control the amount of food eaten. Used wisely, a vegetarian diet plan can help you achieve your ideal weight.

As a soon to be Mommy, you are essentially walking around with another person inside you, caring for and being mindful of his or her future existence come post-pregnancy. It’s all about planning, or doing well now during the pregnancy, simply to lay out a positive health path for your child. During the 9 months before your child is born it is essential to up caloric and nutrient intake, after all you are eating for two now. Yet, if you are not an omnivore and lead a vegetarian lifestyle during pregnancy, there are particular things you should consider doing, in terms of your diet and nutritional monitoring, while carrying your precious and lively babe before birth.

The most important aspect about maintaining a healthy status for you and your baby is to monitor what you’re eating in calories, but more importantly, in vitamin and mineral content. If you keep up with eating healthfully, centering your 9 months around a varied and eclectic diet, you will be able to have a healthy weight gain and accrue sufficient nutrients to provide enough sustenance to your unborn child.

Calorie Increase

Now, although you’re eating for two, this doesn’t mean that you need to multiply your caloric consumption by two as well. All a pregnant women needs, whether vegetarian or omnivore, is an extra 300 calories per day to maintain a healthy status for her child. And since you need an approximate 300 additional calories to drive a healthy pregnancy forward, you should choose foods sensibly, specifically steering clear of fat and calorie imbued fare. Instead, select foods rich with vitamins and nutrients rather than empty, high calorie and fat-filled foods.

Gaining Your Nutrients: Vitamins and Minerals

With calorie issues out of the way, the next step is to monitor how many vitamins and minerals you’re taking in. There are specific vitamins that are essential as a pregnant vegetarian woman you should take note of and incorporate into daily eating habits. Specifically, you will need to be mindful of how much Calcium, Vitamin-D, B-12, Iron and Zinc you are consuming.

Calcium:

Eat more foods rich with calcium, aiming for 4 servings per day. Food wise, try to incorporate foods such as calcium-imbued tofu, dark leafy green vegetables, bok choy, broccoli, calcium-rich cereals and soy milk.

Vitamin D:

Here, you’ll have to rely mainly on food fortification to gain a higher level of Vitamin D. Other than making a point to sit outside and absorb sunlight -which has quite a high concentration of Vitamin D- you can purchase foods ‘injected,’ with with micronutrients (in this case, Vitamin D). Foods such as milk and cereal are the only current options for Vitamin D fortification.

B-12:

You must get sufficient amounts of B-12, yet this can be difficult because many vegetarian eats lack high amounts of this essential vitamin. Again, purchase soy milk or cereal that is enriched with B-12, or opt for a multivitamin that can be taken daily as an added nutrient supplement.

Iron and Zinc:

Iron and Zinc are extremely essential during pregnancy, especially later stages. For Iron, take supplements or ingest fortified breads or cereals. Normal foods though are also chock full of Iron, such as: beans, dark green leafy plants, nuts and seeds.

Zinc, is not an easily obtainable mineral through a vegetarian lifestyle. You will need to supplement, as well as eat whole grain products and legumes.

So, you have 9 months to monitor what you’re consuming, both for yourself and your baby. As a pregnant vegetarian woman, take the proper measures by eating nutritious foods and consuming plentiful vitamins and minerals. Do this and you’ll secure your baby’s health as well as your own.

This story began when I, once having had the need, asked my pal for vegetarian BBQ ideas. He gave me some tips and I had a couple of great bbq parties using them. Lately, I noticed people were likewise asking for the same thing – tips for vegetarian bbq parties and I decided to have a quick article outlining the most important parts my pal has taught me.

From now on, I’ll just speak of the most important tips. First of all, sauce is important. And for sauce, he suggested looking at Yves/Boca vegan burgers, Boca brats, Gardenburger Nate’s products, the MS Farms vegan versions and also Annie’s Naturals which make a great vegan BBQ sauce.

Next, talking about vegetarian bbq preparation, it is worth knowing that prior-marinate is very important. To a quart of cold water he would add about a tablespoon of liquid smoke, a dash of chili powder, a shot of Tabasco chipotle and a slug of olive oil. a shot of agave nectar. Then he would dip all the products into a mix and leave everything to thaw out. Then the grilling begins. Oil the grill. Use many wood chips.

If done correctly, the guy said that the people in the party would not even know that they were eating vegetarian food. They could not believe it when they there told so afterwards.

Another thing, for vegetarian BBQ dessert ideas, as an extra, he suggests this: brush 1 inch thick slices of watermelon with olive oil, dust with salt and chili powder. Over necessarily hot coats grill the melon for a few seconds. Tastes wonderful, according to him!

One of the best ways to remove acne problems permanently is through the change of diet. More specifically is to go vegetarian. I learnt this from a friend of mine who has suffered from acne issue since the age of 14. And here let me share with you how she overcame her acne problem with her vegetarian diet.

She shared that in her teenage years, there was never a time period more than a few days where she did not have any acne popping out of her face. She had moderate acne almost every time. She has tried every kind of acne treatment cream on the market. Only a couple of them worked to a decent degree, the rest were just gimmicky and did not work at all. Going in to high school, she tried Accutane. After a couple months, her acne did completely disappear. However the side affect she had was very dry and irritable skin, which she felt she could still handle with.

She thought she had recovered from acne and stopped using Accutane. However, after a few months, the acne came back with same severity as before. My friend then started practicing yoga as a daily spiritual discipline. She realized everything she read on yoga pointed her to having a vegetarian diet. As she loved yoga, she decided to follow the advice and went vegetarian. In fact, she went a step further and went vegan. She learnt to cook and prepared all her meals from scratch at home. Within a month, her acne vanished, and has not come back. She also realized her skin was not too oily than in the past, and she eventually developed a very healthy skin texture.

What my friend understands is that most acne is caused by inflammation from a rich and processed diet. Because inflammation does not happen outside of someone, it happens as a response to blood toxicity internally. Meat, dairy products, processed food such as canned food, all these are acidic and contain chemicals and toxic that is not good for the skin. So for people suffering from acne, the best acne cure is to eat less meat and processed food, and have more fresh vegetables and fruits in your diet.

Eating vegetables provide you with good minerals and nutrients that build your blood, tissue, bones, and cells. That way, you can prevent your skin from inflammation that causes acne. It is minerals that build every part of your body and keep your body pH at slightly alkaline level as this is the optimal level for your body to function properly. By keeping your body alkaline, you can neutralize body acids which can cause acne. Concentrate on putting minerals into your body by eating plenty of fruits and vegetables.

You do not need to switch to a full vegetarian diet immediately if you find it hard to change overnight. You can just try increasing your vegetables intake slowly, and try eating less meat. If you do not really like to eat a lot of vegetables, you can also try vegetable juice which is a great and tasty substitute. So start changing your diet now as it is a great acne cure that is most effective for anyone with acne skin problems.

Just because a woman becomes pregnant doesn’t necessarily mean she has to alter all of her eating habits. If she lives off of take out Chinese food and Oreos, it should be changed, but if she’s decided to live a healthy and well balanced vegetarian lifestyle, it can easily be incorporated into her new pregnancy diet.

The most important thing when choosing what to eat when pregnant is putting foods into the body that will be healthful and nutrient rich. Many times vegetarians are acutely aware of everything they put into their bodies and oftentimes already have a healthy outlook on diet and eating. Eating a variety of vegetables can do nothing but good for both mommy and baby as long as the basic nutritional values for the day are met. Some guidelines to follow are:

Iron: Eat lots of leafy green vegetables, along with bran, nuts, and seeds to obtain the daily recommended values.

Vitamin B: This is most often found in dairy products so chances are you’re getting enough without even realizing it; wheat germ, beans, whole grains, eggs, and cheese are all good sources of Vitamin B.

Calcium: The best way to get calcium, which is essential for a healthy pregnancy, is through dairy or soy products. Calcium supplements are also a good alternative.

Folic Acid: This can be obtained by eating nuts, dairy products, and yeast.

Protein: Beans, nuts, seeds, and soy all contain hardy doses of protein.

While everyone knows that an apple a day keeps the doctor away, the American Dietetic Association recommends that a pregnant mother increase her fruit and vegetable servings from five to seven a day. Fat content should also be limited as much as possible, and any food with poor nutritional value should always be avoided.

There are also some natural solutions available for the mother who isn’t keen on taking a supplement:

Energy levels can be naturally increased by eating more legumes and whole grains.

Milk production can be increased by certain teas, such as raspberry.

Drinking ginger tea can relieve feelings of nausea and morning sickness.

Increasing fiber by eating whole grains can reduce any problems of constipation.

It’s important when pregnant to discuss any diet with a doctor. While a vegetarian diet may be a healthy option most of the time, only the doctor knows if there are certain things that should be avoided as each pregnancy is different.

Surprisingly, being a vegetarian bodybuilder isn’t really as difficult as many people automatically assume it is. In some ways it may be easier because adhering to a real vegetarian diet takes a lot of focus and discipline, two things that will greatly help you in the gym.

First, we should define our terms because there are three basic groups of people who consider themselves “vegetarians.” I refer to these three groups as pseudo-vegetarians, meat vegetarians and vegetarians. The pseudo vegetarian avoids beef, chicken and poultry but will sometimes eat fish and has no problem with other animal products. A meat vegetarian avoids all meat. A vegetarian avoids any foods (or products in general) that contain any amount of animal product.

This article is aimed directly at the true vegetarians, who avoid all animal products. The meat-vegetarians and pseudo-vegetarians will gain useful information as well, but true vegetarians have very specialized needs during bodybuilding.

Since there is no difference in biological manner in which a vegetarian and a carnivore actually build muscles, we don’t need to go into any specific exercise differences. Instead, we’ll be focusing on dietary issues.

The first challenge goes back to the way muscles build in our bodies. We exercise our muscles, which does microscopic damage to the tissue and then our bodies repair the damage with bigger and stronger tissue while we recuperate. To effectively do this, our bodies need to use protein in massive amounts, which is why bodybuilders increase their protein intake.

Vegetarians face a challenge here because the most common source of protein is meat. Okay, so it’s not actually that much of a challenge. According to the Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Score, soy is equal to whey and superior to beef in protein content. Soy provides all 8 essential amino acids required by your body for growing and repairing muscles. Vegetarians would be well-advised to consider soy as a primary protein source.

The really good news is that soy is also a fantastic source of glutamine which many bodybuilders already take in supplemental form. Soy is available in many different forms such as tofu, miso, soy powder and soy milk. Soy milk is definitely something to have on hand as it can be used to replace cow’s milk in recipes, which will help expand your basic food options.

Almonds, sunflower seeds, walnuts, and pistachio nuts are all excellent sources of both protein and fat; the vegetarian needs to work on getting enough good fats as well, so with the above examples you can go nuts…was that a pun?

You can also add a tablespoon or so of flaxseed oil, as flax seed is one of the very best sources for the essential fatty acid alpha linolenic acid.

Finally, vegetarians need to ensure that they get enough vitamins and minerals. This can be done in multivitamin form although most of the meal-replacement shakes which are so popular among bodybuilders already contain vitamins and minerals galore. The only additional vitamin to look for is B12, which is generally an animal product based vitamin.

Like I said in the beginning, it isn’t nearly as hard to be a vegetarian bodybuilder as many people would think. You’ve got the discipline part down and, by following the guidelines listed above, you will be set up nutritionally to build massive amounts of muscle!

Our earth is bursting with people and stress has been put on food resources. It is getting really difficult to maintain the quality of food in this fast changing world. Hence, more and more people are becoming vegetarians as a solution for their health problems.

It is a fact, vegetarians are healthier than non-vegetarians. According to studies and surveys, vegetarians actually suffer less from diseases like cancer, high blood pressure and other heart problems. Majority of heart problems are caused by high intakes of cholesterol found mainly in animal fats and dairy products. That’s why it is advised to follow a strict and balanced diet chart rather than enjoying meats. Cut down meat sounds bad but it is far healthier and protective means for keeping your cholesterol level normal.

Experts recommend a special diet which is effective in preventing fat and decreasing extra cholesterol of the body. It is necessary to know what should be included in the diet to get all nutrients which are responsible for healthier growth of the body.

As a great source of nutrition and energy, fresh fruits and fruit juices must be frequently used as they are good in taste and sufficient in clearing several other health problems. Raw fiber Vegetables like beans, lentil, cabbage and carrots should also use frequently to lower your cholesterol level. Popcorns and fresh yoghurt too are high in proteins with all most no fat. Avoid consuming soda and sugary fruit juices as they may increase cholesterol level more than your need. Barley and oats which are rich in viscous fiber contains a soluble fiber called “Beta Glucen”, a prime factor in lowering cholesterol effectively. Nuts such as almonds and walnuts, rich in monosaturated and polysaturated fats also lower down bad cholesterol. It also encourages the presence of HDL.
Soy products are very important food which cuts the cholesterol level drastically. According to researchers it is better to include at least 25 Gms of soy products in the diet daily to minimize the level of cholesterol by 15 to 20 percent straightaway. Planning of such diet does not only ensure health but overall can cut LDL by 30 percent.

Go vegetarian and ensure you have optimum fruits, almonds, soy products and oats for all your meals. It is not only economical, humane, environment friendly but also healthier. A healthy option for all as long as it is properly planned and contains all nutrients. “Be vegetarian, be healthy”

There is no truth to the rumor that vegetarians have difficult recipes to follow and that not following complicated recipes will result in bland food. The truth is that there are so many options for easy healthy vegetarian recipes. The wealth of choices actually makes vegetarianism an exciting journey into healthy food. Here are some things you need to remember when preparing easy healthy vegetarian recipes.

Check the Label

The most convenient way to create healthy recipes is to stock ahead on sauces and ingredients. This way you just have to open packs and cans when you need to whip up something fast. This is generally a good idea especially if you’re thinking of canned beans, salsa sauce, dried peas, canned mushrooms and tomato sauce.

You should however always make it a point to read labels before adding unfamiliar ingredients to easy healthy vegetarian recipes. Some products may seem vegetarian but may contain animal based ingredients like gelatin and animal oil. Pure vegans might also want to find out if instant foods contain cheese, milk and other dairy products.

Cook the Same Way

Easy healthy vegetarian recipes are basically similar to regular meat containing recipes. The only thing lacking is meat. This means that you just have to cook like you always do. Just have a little knowledge to supplement your nutrients and a little creativity to make easy healthy vegetarian recipes as tasty as meat dishes.

Protein substitute are found in beans, nuts and legumes. Calcium can be obtained from milk and green leafy vegetables. To make your easy healthy vegetarian recipes especially tasty you can experiment with herbs and spices like chilies, oregano, thyme, rosemary and basil.

Don’t Overdo Plain Dishes

There is absolutely nothing wrong with serving steamed vegetables, corn and peas. They are also obviously easy healthy vegetarian recipes. Sometimes though, you might want to cut back on these basic dishes so that your family doesn’t get too bored with the same taste. Serve the same dishes but maybe you can sauté these food items first with some tasty onions, garlic and some pepper.

Serve Healthy Snacks

Sometimes all you need to prepare and serve easy healthy vegetarian recipes is just a little bit more time. To make sure that your family members don’t come home hungry and ready for a big meal at six, serve them healthy snacks to delay their craving for dinner. Pack some nuts, dried fruits, fruit mixes, crackers and cheese for them to take to school or work.

Serve Raw and Simple

Raw vegetarianism is still considered a controversial issue but those who stand by it maintain that it is the healthiest way of life and is the greatest source of easy healthy vegetarian recipes. You might want to try one night in seven as a raw night. Raw foods are considered healthy because they lose none of their nutrients through heat in the cooking process. More rigid raw eaters simply blend fruits and vegetables. You may however just want to settle for simple salads with delicious dips and sauces.

Vegetarian athletes have special needs to be able to perform at a higher level of energy than those who don’t exert themselves athletically each and every day. Vegetarian sports nutrition and calorie intake are very important to consistently help your body to perform at it’s best.

Most nutritional challenges of vegetarian sports nutrition can be met by planning ahead and having a variety of foods available at home. Variety in your vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds will assure the correct vitamins, minerals and essential amino acids in the diet.

Vegetarian sports nutrition must meet the energy needs of the athlete. Energy sources can simply be your favorite fruits, root vegetables, whole grains and green leafy vegetables.

Proteins, needed for repair of tissues, building and repairing muscles, red blood cell production and just running your body, can be received from fruits, green leaves, nuts and root vegetables. Some excellent sources of protein include avocados, dates, bananas, and almonds.

Protein requirements are not different for vegetarian athletes than for athletes who don’t eat vegetarian sports nutrition. Athletes should take 1.2 to 2 grams of protein per kilograms of body weight.

Our bodies also require minerals to repair and replace muscles and hormones. There are several factors that are important to the absorption of minerals and vitamins. How the foods are combined, use of microwaves and incorporating the occasional fast all impact how minerals and vitamins are absorbed into the body.

Individual sources of plant protein do not supply all nine essential amino acids that meats and animal proteins do. However, eating a variety of vegetables during the day will supply all nine amino acids; what one vegetable is missing another will supply.

Calcium is also essential to nutrition. Vegetarian sports nutrition should plan for sources from plants or add supplements since athletes who are low may have increased risk of bone and stress fractures.

Athletes also are at risk for iron deficiency, especially females. Iron loss is increased during heavy training. Vegetarian sports nutrition should incorporate spinach, a good supply of iron, into the diet. Vitamin C also improves iron absorption. The main symptoms of iron deficiency are weakness and rapid fatigue during exercise.

Low zinc levels can also be a problem for vegetarian athletes in heavy training. Zinc sources are pumpkin seeds, pecans, split peas, Brazil nuts, rye, whole wheat, oats, peanuts, walnuts and almonds.

Vegetarian sports nutrition should include appropriate amounts of energy, carbohydrates, protein, vitamins and minerals is critical for optimal performance. Athletes who practice a vegetarian lifestyle must do a little planning to ensure the correct balance of nutrition in their diets.

So, you think you want to become a vegetarian. Why? That is probably the first question you should ask yourself. The reason for that question, of course, is that in order to make a significant change in your life – and it will be significant – you need to have a reason to commit. Otherwise you may find yourself frustrated and unwilling to continue toward achieving your goal.

There are any number of articles, books and other publications that will provide you with a list of methods to follow to achieve a transition to a vegetarian lifestyle. I use the term lifestyle rather than diet because, as I said, it is a significant change. It is a lifestyle that you will follow because you will be faced with challenges at every turn. Family and friends may scoff ortry to talk you out of your decision. Restaurants that serve a variety of vegetarian dishes are still difficult to find in many parts of the country. And, if you like meat to begin with, you will be tempted by the aroma of that steak on your neighbor’s grill or the scent that wafts through your car window as you drive past the fast food joint in town, or simply going out for dinner with friends.

So, think about it. Do you want to become a vegetarian for health reasons? Is it because you are concerned about the environment and the impact that raising livestock has on it? Are you finding a sense of compassion that has come to make you realize that the suffering of animals matters? Whatever your reason(s), learn as much as you can before or as you begin. Google it – use keywords like “animal welfare”, “animal rights”, “vegetarian nutrition”, “plant-based diet” and so on. As I said, there is a wealth of information out there so study a little and you will make your commitment stronger. Also consider talking with your physician and/or a registered dietician, particularly if you may have health issues which may be impacted by your decision to become vegetarian. Get several opinions. Not all physicians are attuned to the benefits of a vegetarian lifestyle either. So if yours isn’t, perhaps you can find one who is and get a second opinion.

All of that said, here are 6 simple ways you can begin to make the transition.

1. Start gradually

Give up red meat first. It is probably the worst from the standpoint of what it does to your body. Even then, phase it out gradually. If you eat red meat once a week now, try to cut back to every other week for a couple of months. Then, after you have pretty much cut the red out of your diet altogether you can begin to work on other meats.

2. Experiment

Get yourself a good, simple vegetarian cookbook. You don’t need to worry about becoming a gourmet vegetarian cook just yet! Some of the best vegetarian cookbooks are those that offer simple recipes that have a limited number of ingredients or a short prep time. You know what I mean. The book states “50 vegetarian dishes that you can make in 30 minutes or less” or “Great vegetarian recipes with only five ingredients”. Get the idea? Try a few recipes so that you have some variation as you begin the transition. Bookmark the ones you like best. Mix up your weekly menu, again for variety. Also, check out the abundance of good websites which have wonderful vegetarian and vegan recipes. Again, Google the keywords and you’ll find some gems!

3. Slowly work in things of which you are unsure

You don’t want to get turned off right away! I can remember thinking I could never eat tofu. I didn’t like the looks of it or the texture, both important nuances for enjoying what you eat. I found that by finding dishes which could utilize tofu as an optional or added ingredient and adding a little at a time each time I had that dish, I gradually became accustomed to tofu. I found that it does take on the flavor of what it is cooked with a lot of the time so dishes with a lot of onion or garlic helped! Sometimes crumbling it or cutting smaller “chunks” made it more palatable, rather than having a large “slab” with which to deal. Marinating it overnight or for at least several hours also works well.

4. Continue to educate yourself

Read whatever you can find about plant-based diets and vegetarian nutrition. Find out how to insure that you are planning meals and eating enough variety to provide the nutrients your body needs, particularly protein and vitamin B12. Visit a natural foods store and ask questions. They will be glad to help. Seek out other vegetarians or vegans for support, encouragement and ideas. Or, join a vegetarian “club” or organization. If you don’t have any in your area, why not start one?

5. Use substitutes

What do I mean, use substitutes? Well, since most of the food you will be eating is “lighter” than a meat based meal, you may not feel as full as you were accustomed to being after you finish a meal. In that respect you may be tempted to snack more. If you are, try to substitute the snacks you used to eat with fruit, berries, nuts and so on. These will be better for you and help to contribute to your daily intake of protein. Drink lots of water. It will not only help you stay properly hydrated but also fill your tummy a bit, taking away some of the cravings. If you have a sweet tooth try to avoid sugar and foods with a lot of sugar in them. If you feel the urge to eat something that you normally put sugar on (I eat a lot of cereal snacks) try using agave nectar instead.

6. Enjoy yourself

Make it fun! Experimenting with new recipes is always fun. When you think about the good you are doing for yourself, for the environment and for the animals, it will be even more fun. Vary your meal plans so you have a wide variety and you won’t tire of it or get discouraged. Set goals like a month of total vegetarianism equals a reward of a new cookbook! If the whole friends and family thing becomes too much, turn the tables on them and challenge them to join you even if it’s for just one meal! Keep a journal – it may become your best seller one day! As I said before, there are many ways to make the transition to a vegetarian lifestyle and just as many books, magazines, articles, blogs and websites to tell you “their way”. The bottom line is this – do it because you want to and you know the reasons it’s important to you. Find a website, a friend or a book that you trust and let that trust be your guide. Monitor your health and wellness and be sure to get proper nutrition and exercise. You will succeed! Be proud of that in advance! Bon appetite!

Contrary to popular belief, not all of us Vegetarians are the stereotypical twenty something blonde athletes who take yoga classes and go for early morning jogs. We don’t all have strict diets and count every calorie we come into contact with. We crave candy and sweets just as everybody else does. We are human afterall!

When I first began my vegetarian journey I assumed that the few extra pounds I had gained during childbirth would drop off. Unfortunately this wasn’t the case!

Believe it or not I actually gained weight in the first few months! I had stopped watching what I was eating and assumed that my meals were less fattening without the meat. It wasn’t until I saw my heartbreaking ‘fat photo’ from my sisters wedding that I knew it was time to make a change.

I joined a gym which I rarely went to, hired a personal trainer who I didn’t call back and drained my wallet on fad diets. I was losing the battle of the bulge!

Now I was discussing my dilemma with one of the ladies at my vegetarian society club. The conversation began with me jokingly warning her ‘when you get to my age your body will catch up with you’ etc. I was shocked when she pulled out a photo from her wallet of her looking at LEAST 40lbs heavier!

The beast (excuse the metaphor) in the photo didn’t even slightly resemble the trim, fit looking woman standing in front of me! She told me her secrets and now (30lbs lighter I might add) I too carry my fat photo around as proof that I was not always in the best shape of my life!

Her method has proven so successful that she was approached by one of the leading vegetarian diet websites on the internet to sell her diet plan.

If you are SERIOUS about losing weight, you cannot bear to look at your flabby stomach any longer and it is too emotionally for you to continue putting off your diet then my advice to you is to follow this simple method!

“It does not matter what you eat. Just don’t eat a lot, exercise, and your weight will not be a problem.” True? Not quite!

There is scientific evidence that a vegetarian diet keeps that weight down, whereas meat eaters put it on. What you eat does matter.

You know that weight loss is an industry. A money-making industry with many claims to make: Claims of weight loss pills, herbs and juices. Claims of exercise machines and exercise programmes. Claims of high-fat, no fat or lean diets. Which work? Which do not? How to find those things that work? It is bewildering. And expensive!

The US FDA has warned against the effectiveness of a number of products that are being marketed. They include fat or starch blockers, weight loss chewing gum and body wraps.

Even weight loss earrings and spectacles are in this list. Perhaps the last one is effective when your friends wear them to look at you?

By contrast, vegetarians and vegans know what they eat and why they eat it. They save money and lose weight.

Weight loss of both your body and your wallet? Why not.

Vegetarian food production is inherently cheaper than that of meat.

Just like a high fibre vegetarian diet goes through your system faster, the vegetarian food production chain is short compared to that of growing meat. Growing animals for meat is after all energy-intensive, time-consuming and expensive.

For instance, it takes five kilograms of grain to produce one kilogram of beef. It is that concentrated energy that you eat. And it’s not high-fibre.

Short production cycles are better for the planet and shorter digestive processes are better for you.

Perhaps you do not even need special low calorie vegetarian recipes to lose weight. A vegetarian or vegan diet appears to be a recipe for weight loss in itself! At least it represents an excellent start.

Consider the latest research.

Vegetarian and vegan diets work

Recent British scientific research is based on a study of 22,000 people who were followed over five years. All participants put on weight over that time. However, meat eaters who changed to a vegetarian diet gained the least weight.

Prof Tim Keys, who led this study for the University of Oxford and Cancer Research UK, obtained interesting results that are contrary to popular beliefs. His study is published in the Journal of Obesity.

He said: “Contrary to current popular views that a diet low in carbohydrates and high in protein keeps weight down, we found that the lowest weight gain came in people with high intake of carbohydrates and low intake of protein.”

The study involved meat eaters, fish eaters, vegetarians and vegans. On average the entire human sample population gained 2 kilos over the five years and none of them were overweight. The less consumption of animal products, the less weight was gained, leaving the vegans on top, with vegetarians runners-up.

And the bit about exercising then? Well, it’s part of a holistic picture it seems. The study also found that those who became more physically active gained less weight than those who did not. No surprises there.

So, not good news for vegan couch potatoes and a ray of hope for raging carnivores? Well…, the simple message is, whatever you eat, physical activity is part of the weight loss, and health-deal.

Good health

Health too? Yes, this study is part of a larger investigation by EPIC (European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition), comparing half a million people’s diets in 10 countries to learn how diet is linked to cancer. Results from EPIC’s investigation show that diet is a leading cause of some cancers.

A balanced vegetarian or vegan diet is good for your health.

Take diabetes, often a condition associated with inadequate diet and being over-weight. The EPIC study has revealed that diabetics carry three times the normal risk of developing colo-rectal cancer.

And a recent Australian study even suggests that a diet that is rich in vegetables and fruit can reduce the effects of asthma attacks.

The wider benefits of choosing a vegetarian or vegan diet for weight loss are obvious.

But… perhaps you’d still rather take the ‘easy way’ out and continue to eat meat. Meat perhaps that has been engineered for your ‘health’?

Voila! Researchers at Harvard University have now engineered pigs to produce “healthy forms of bacon, ham and pork crackling.”

Three little pigs were genetically modified to carry Omega 3-converting genes of a nematode worm. This gives the meat of these three little research pigs the benefits of fats and oils found in fish and… vegetables!

Talk about a long production process to get the same benefits from plants that take a fraction of the energy and time to produce.

I’m telling no porky: before long pigs will fly… But do you want to eat them?

Motivation

Weight loss may be your focus but you can see that its achievement is connected to a holistic picture, including your health and that of the world we live in. That is why you could say that many vegetarians and vegans are socially responsible eaters.

Perhaps that insight will give you the motivation to become a vegetarian or vegan: to lose weight…and to discover a whole new world!

Of course some people have medical conditions that cause them to be over weight.

It would be foolish to recommend a vegetarian diet as a miracle cure in those instances. But in all other cases of being over weight there is one over-riding thing that you need: motivation.

If you know why you want to lose weight you will do it. Motivation is everything. The evidence is in on effectiveness of vegetarian diets with respect to weight loss.

If you also know that you are doing your body and the planet a favour by losing weight through vegetarian or vegan diets… then what are you waiting for?

It’s over to you!

There is debate over whether taking on a vegetarian diet is a natural high blood pressure cure or not. Some claim that this is the best way to keep your blood pressure in check, citing reasons that meat is the root cause of high levels. Others say that the effects of eliminating all meat can be just as dangerous and keep your body from receiving the nutrients it needs. Which side is correct: both, to put it simply.

There is evidence for each side of the vegetarian versus meat argument and it comes down to you deciding what is best for your particular lifestyle. Is the vegetarian diet a natural high blood pressure cure? It can be, if you understand the other risks.

There are, essentially, three forms of vegetarian diet. The lacto vegetarian will eat dairy products but not eggs; the ovo vegetarian will eat eggs but not dairy products. And, finally, the vegan diet does not allow either, and even restricts the use of such animal byproducts as honey. Any of these diets can lower blood pressure. They are not, however, always healthy.

By cutting out meat and dairy products, you deprive your body of protein and other vitamins that it needs. This can have serious health effects. When you remove certain foods, you can lose things like iron, vitamin D, zinc, calcium, protein, etc. These are essential to maintaining a healthy body.

Before you adopt a vegetarian diet, in any form, you must consult with your doctor and learn how to get these nutrients without the usual practices of eating meat and dairy. He or she will inform you of the certain vegetables and fruits that can provide them, as well as offer alternatives like vitamin pills and soy products. Lowering your blood pressure will do little good if you are hurting your body in other ways.

Becoming a vegetarian is a life choice and, often, people cannot handle it. Whether this is because they happen to crave meat or can’t get enough nutrition through their selection of fruits and vegetables (such as with pregnant or nursing women, who generally require more than this diet would allow), they fail. Becoming a vegetarian is a radical change of eating and you need to understand that. Otherwise, you may find this type of natural high blood pressure cure impossible to stick with.

First, consult your doctor. Know exactly how high your blood pressure is; this can dictate the steps you need to take to lower it. If it is not too above normal, switching to a vegetarian diet (at least, the more strict vegan form) may be more drastic than needed. Instead, your doctor would simply recommend that you cut back on your meat products and exercise more regularly.

For those who have a blood pressure level that is high, however, this may be the change you need. By combining this and a steady exercise plan, you can lower your level and get yourself healthy. You would have to learn how to maintain this level, though, and it can be a challenge. It cannot be stressed enough, that too many people think making sweeping lifestyle changes are easy because they’re not.

You have to consider your way of life and your attitude towards adopting a meat free diet. That is the only way to know if a vegetarian diet will work for you. Of course, you need more than a vegetarian diet to act as a natural blood pressure cure. Exercise is also an essential part of staying healthy and keeping your blood pressure levels in check.

This article is for vegetarians and their families who want a list of high protein foods from vegetarian sources. Healthy vegetarians must take care to meet protein requirements adequately. Vegans need to be even more sensitive to their body’s needs. I have raw vegan friends who cured themselves of serious conditions, and years later are still thriving on vegan foods. Many people feel vegetarianism supports their emotional/spiritual wellbeing. If you’re going to do it, do it well!

The list of high protein foods from vegetarian sources

1) Spirulina

A rare vegetarian ‘complete protein’ because it contains all the essential amino acids. Spirulina is 85-95% digestible and easy for the body to digest and assimilate. Enjoy spirulina in a smoothie or dressing.

2) Bee pollen

Approximately 40% protein and packed with essential minerals and vitamins. It is one of nature’s most completely nourishing super foods. Bee pollen is contains more protein than any animal source; more amino acids than beef, eggs, or cheese of equal weight.

3) Soy products

½ cup of cooked soybeans contain 10 grams of protein and ¼ cup of tofu contains 10 grams of protein. While soy products have been a small part of some Asian diets for hundreds of years, they are new to the west. In China and Japan soy products were always made fresh, and often a special treat, unlike highly processed varieties. The verdict is not out on soy. Enjoy in moderation. Choose best quality organic tofu and unsweetened natural soy milks. Fermented soy products like tempeh are easier to digest.

4) Beans and legumes

2/3 cup of cooked chickpeas equals about 10 grams of protein each. Beans contain incomplete protein. This means you need to combine them with other protein containing vegetable foods. Eating beans and grains together is a classic combination and provides complete protein.

5) Eggs
Eggs are ‘eggcellent’ protein and a source of quality monounsaturated fat. Go organic and free range because an egg is only as good as the chicken that laid it.

6) Dairy

A good form of protein but…

In an ideal world we would get our milk raw and straight from the cow. Raw organic milk and fermented milk products are much better for you than pasteurized and homogenized.

Why? Homogenization breaks milk down into smaller particles. These particles can be absorbed intact, sometimes causing lactose intolerance. Pasteurization was implemented to sanitize milk, but it kills the goodies too. The enzymes in raw milk aid digestion, plus special lactic acid producing bacteria protect against pathogens in the milk.

If you can only get treated organic milk, no worries – here are suggestions to make to make pasteurized homogenized milk protein more digestible:

• Eat yoghurt (it has been re-enlivened with living yoghurt cultures which help digestion)

• Warm the milk with digestive spices like cardamom, cinnamon and ginger.

• Cottage cheese is more digestible when you add a little yoghurt.

• Try goat and sheep products

There are networks in the US providing legal raw milk. Ask around.

7) Protein powder

Whey protein powders are a processed protein option. However a protein powder smoothie is fine as an occasional snack or breakfast. Quality is the key for total health.
Look for:

• ‘Ultra-filtered’. If you have lactose intolerance choose the even finer ‘micro-filtered’ as this process removes lactose.

• No artificial flavours and sweeteners

• About 70-80% protein

How to stay healthy eating only vegetarian protein

• Be tuned in to your bodies needs. Eat more spirulina, bee pollen and legumes if you feel you need more protein.

• Are you free from food cravings? For example sugar cravings can be a sign of protein deficiency.

• Take blood tests for serum albumin, iron deficiency and vitamin B12 deficiency a couple of times a year.

• Be aware of these other symptoms of protein deficiency: brittle unhealthy hair, overly ‘moon-shaped’ face, thinking a lot about eating, weight and hunger, shrinkage of muscle tissue, oedema, and slow growth (in children).

• Check if your dietary choices spring from self-kindness or from a sense that you ‘should’ eat that way. Being a healthy vegetarian over years needs to feel intrinsically right for you on all levels. Then go for it!

There are lots of different reasons for changing to a vegetarian lifestyle. For most people it’s generally to do with creating a healthier way of life in order to reduce weight, blood pressure, cholesterol and their blood sugar levels, so as to prevent heart disease, diabetes, obesity, digestive disorders, bowel problems and other medical issues. A vegetarian diet helps them achieve this.

Some people decide on the change due to their moral and ethical beliefs regarding the treatment and use of animals for food, clothing and scientific experiments. However the main reason for the change to vegetarianism is for improved health purposes usually associated with a recent diagnosis after a health check-up. For example, a vegetarian diet can be of great help to someone recently diagnosed with diabetes as this disease is usually associated with diet and lifestyle.

A vegetarian is generally a person that does not eat meat however they could conceivably include dairy products such as eggs, milk and cheese in their diet.

Another category of vegetarianism is the person who refuses to consume any animal product or by-product, including dairy foods. These people are considered the true vegetarians as their diet consists mainly of vegetables, fruits, nuts, grains and legumes.

It is important, however, if you decide on the vegetarian lifestyle, to become familiar with the foods you are consuming to make sure you are getting all the necessary proteins and vitamins to maintain good health.

Most vegetarians will eat cooked vegetables, fruit etc. but do not overcook their meals in order to retain as much nutritional value as possible. Their is a growing movement in vegetarian circles to only eat raw and living foods. However to go down this path, you need to have a complete understanding of your body’s requirements to maintain a healthy balance.

It’s time now for you to start the education process to become totally familiar with your new lifestyle requirements through the many information products available.

Once you have mastered the art of vegetarian preparation and cooking you will find the whole family will enjoy these healthy, delicious and life changing meals.

What are you waiting for? Start to-day!

Pursuing a healthy vegetarian diet is a difficult but possible task. The benefits of such a plan are numerous: it is low in calories, raises consumption awareness, and limits the amount of harm done to living beings. Without a doubt, putting yourself on a regimen free of meat products requires some personal discipline, but there are numerous ways to pursue such a regime. One does not take a first time swimmer up to the ten meter diving board on their first day at a pool; likewise, if you are attempting to put yourself on your first diet, it may be advisable to take the endeavor in steps. Consider your options when first beginning to pursue your new healthy diet.

Though it has been associated with different religions throughout history, vegetarianism as a general dietary practice belongs to no specific religion or set of beliefs. One need only have a commitment to changing their diet and a willingness to address their own individual strengths and weaknesses in order to successfully eat as a vegetarian. Humans are omnivores, which mean they can properly digest both meat, and non-meat products. For thousands of years man has been altering his eating regime to fit the changing needs and situations of their environment. No one particular type of diet has ever been the perfect one, as the perfect way of eating has and will continue to change to be that which fits the needs and desires of a given individual. Some dieticians have suggested that man is more properly suited to follow a vegetarian plan, as meat eating tends to store more fat than is necessary or desirable. This is a contentious point, and as such need not be considered as an absolute truth in the decision to become a vegetarian. Surely, if one were to eat a vegetarian diet rich in fatty nuts and almonds one would end up consuming more fat than an omnivore. It’s not so much the fact of being a vegetarian in name that will give you the benefits, vegetarianism as a practice is a means to an end and not the culmination of the search for a healthy regimen.

The vegetarian diet is intimidating. For many individuals in western society, the exact foods (typically, meat) that are forbidden in vegetarianism are the most enjoyable. This need not destroy your decision to purse this plan because vegetarianism is not an all or nothing kind of deal. Take the weight off your shoulders by realizing that even lifelong vegetarians do not agree on a standard regime. Just a sampling of some of the more common vegetarianisms can convince one of the flaws of the way of eating. Vegans, one of the more strict branches, do not eat any products that have been made from animals, or from animal by-products, such as milk or cheese. Some other branches are more forgiving, such as fish/poultry vegetarians who do not eat red meat but will eat fish and poultry. Likewise, the pacing of your vegetarianism need not be a rigorous and painful one. For example, you can begin your regimen by first eliminating meat products that you do not enjoy, then slowly work your way up to a way of eating you wish to have.

A good rule of thumb to pursue is one month per eating stage. If you are working your way towards an all vegan diet, try cutting out chicken for one month, then cow products then next month, then fish the third month. In this way you will be sure to put only an amount of pressure on yourself that you can maintain and live with. Ultimately, being a vegetarian should be a healthy source of joy in your life and your solution to the healthy diet puzzle.

Have you ever considered making the switch to a vegetarian diet? It’s undeniable that eating a diet rich in vegetables, grains, fruits and legumes is healthy. It’s also undeniable that the fat and cholesterol that comes from animal products is just not good for you. I think it is because of these facts that more and more people are switching or at least considering switching to a vegetarian diet.

It can seem daunting to give up meat since it is such a staple in the typical American diet but it really is not so tough. These days the grocery stores are full of vegetarian foods. The meat substitutes that are available are much improved so if you haven’t tried them lately, than you haven’t tried them. They can make the transition quite painless and take away the feeling like you are missing something.

Of course many of the daily foods that you already eat are vegetarian anyway, the problem is that we were raised to stick a piece of meat on the plate along with them and that piece of meat has taken up more and more space on our plates for too long. The result is the rampant heart disease, high cholesterol and high blood pressure that we see. It doesn’t have to be that way.

Vegetarians love their food as much as anyone, they are not upset about it or feel like they are sacrificing or doing without. Quite the opposite in fact, when you eat a vegetarian diet you really appreciate food and the powerful role it can play in your life, it is delicious and it is nutritious; it makes you feel good and it gives you energy.

It is also a big misconception that a vegetarian diet is restrictive. When you really think about it there is only a few kinds of meat; that from cows, pigs, chickens and lamb. On the other hand there are countless grains, vegetables, fruits and beans that can be combined in numerous ways to create fabulous and healthy meals. Many recipes can be converted simply by removing the meat or by removing the meat and adding a meat substitute or beans. Happily, most restaurants offer many vegetarian options on their menus these days so going out to dinner will not be a problem that you have to face either.

Remember also that switching to a vegetarian diet does not have to be accomplished over night. One way to start is to plan a few vegetarian days per week and than you can slowly add another day per week until you get to your goal. This way you can ease yourself into your new way of eating.

So much of what and why we eat is habit and conditioning. The way you eat as you are growing up plays a huge role in the way you eat as an adult. This is why making a change like this can seem overwhelming. It is changing everything you know; it is reprogramming your preconceived notions about food. You may have even been raised to think that you need meat in order to be healthy.

We know better now, but that doesn’t erase everything that was instilled in us as we were growing up. That is why I think that educating yourself throughout the process is a key to success. Get some vegetarian cookbooks or check out a vegetarian recipe website. Look over some books that discuss factory farming or the health benefits of vegetarian eating. The more you know the more you will be inspired to change the way you eat.

While making the decision to become a vegetarian is a personal choice and can be done for physical, mental, or spiritual reasons, here are some great reasons that can make the decision to become a vegetarian easier.

Many vegetarians choose this lifestyle for ethical reasons. They are animal lovers and do not want to take any part in harming a living creature. When a person chooses not to buy and eat meat products, they are sending out a message to the corporations that operate “factory farms”, that they will not support inhumane treatment of animals. When animals are slaughtered, it is violent and usually done by hanging the animal upside down and slitting its throat. Animals contained on these so-called “farms” are also enclosed in cramped quarters where they cannot move and have no access to fresh water and sunshine. Many of these unfortunate creatures die either in cages or on their way to be slaughtered. When you learn of these things, you realize that by not eating meat, it is a small sacrifice compared to what the poor animal must endure.

A plant-based diet is also wonderful for health reasons. Acne can clear up and be replaced by glowing skin. You will be more fit and trim compared to someone that eats meat. There are few, if any, obese vegetarians. Coronary disease risk is cut almost in half. The risk of diabetes is reduced. Type II diabetes is a serious, growing problem among adults and youth in the United States.

Plants contain the majority of vitamins and minerals that are essential for our bodies to be strong and healthy. From omega-3′s to complex carbohydrates, plants have it all. Plants contain fiber and that is something that is sorely lacking from the American diet. Fiber is needed to help move wastes through the body so they can be eliminated. Elimination is important and this function helps reduce the risk of colon cancer.

Many meat products have been found to contain parasites and bacteria. It wasn’t too long ago that Mad Cow disease made headlines around the world. Who hasn’t heard of foot and mouth disease? These are some scary things to face for a meat-eater, even if the risk of being affected by them is low.

Let’s not forget about the environmental benefits that leading a vegetarian lifestyle includes. It takes three or more times as much water for animal products to be made than plant-based products. That is a huge water savings alone and considering that several parts of the world are facing a water shortage, there is no better time to begin water conservation. More plant-based food can be produced, feeding more people. This is because for just one pound of beef to be produced, sixteen pounds of grains must be used. That’s sixteen pounds of edible plants that could be sent to a third-world country to feed starving people there. We also save trees, by not cutting them down for livestock grazing land.

If all of these things were not reason enough to become a vegetarian, there is the financial savings of it. Being a vegetarian is even good for your pocketbook. Health costs will go down because you will be in better physical and mental health. Try to buy fruits and vegetables in season, when they are fresh and plentiful and will cost less too.

There are so many reasons to become vegetarian and these were just a few. You can see what a change to this type of lifestyle can produce and how it can help benefit not just yourself, but others as well.

Did you know that on average, vegetarians have lower blood fat levels, cholesterol and triglycerides than people who are meat eaters and of a similar age and social status? It’s an accepted fact that humans with high levels of blood fats are more at risk of heart disease.

There is no denying that there are enormous health benefits of a vegetarian diet derived from the elimination of red meats from your diet or change of eating habits. Vegetarians who abstain from eating all animal foods are also more likely to have lower cholesterol levels than meat eaters.

Studies have found that older men who eat meat six or more times a week are twice as likely to die of heart disease as those who abstain from meat. It has also been revealed in studies that a middle-aged man who is a meat eater is four times more likely to suffer a heart attack. Research carried out in Britain involving 10,000 vegetarians and meat eaters found that the more meat consumed, the greater the risk of a heart attack.

Large amounts of high-fat dairy products and cholesterol-rich eggs can also cause a build up of blood fats and cholesterol.

The benefits of a vegetarian way of life are obvious. You should be thinking of introducing more vegetables, fruit and raw foods into your eating habits and making a commitment to yourself to undertake your own research including finding vegetarian recipes that are delicious, healthy and life prolonging.

As the change is quite drastic initially, after living a meat eating lifestyle, it would be advisable to introduce your vegetarian meals gradually. Perhaps once a week to start, with a view to introducing further vegetarian meals on a regular basis once you and your family have adjusted to the new eating habits. Your goal is to eliminate all red meats as soon as possible.

Yes, this is a life changing experience for you and your family. However, changing your eating habits to a total vegetarian diet will give you the health benefits to help you enjoy life to the fullest with more energy, as you will be more leaner and fitter and ready to live an extended, happy life. It’s never too late to start – Don’t put it off any longer!

Are you into vegetarian recipes? How about trying out vegetarian recipes in Chinese style? Not sure what to use? No worries! Here are five most commonly used ingredients you can use to create you own Chinese style vegetarian meal!

1. Mushroom

The mushroom you see here is actually the dried mushroom, which is also known as Black Mushroom, Chinese Black Mushroom or Dried Flower Mushroom.

It is an excellent ingredient to add taste and aroma to your dishes. It is also an excellent absorbent which takes in the taste and flavor of your cooking – thus giving you a pleasurable bite; exploding the splendor in your mouth as you chew!

Because of it’s ability to add taste and aroma to the dishes, it is commonly added into vegetarian dishes to add more flavor to the otherwise plain vegetables.

2. Chinese Wolfberry

These tiny red seeds has sweet and plain taste, and has found its way into many Chinese soup and dishes. In fact, it is considered to be one of the medicine used in Traditional Chinese medicine.

It is also used to improve lung functions, strengthen lower limbs, reduce headache and fainting, improve premature ejaculation etc. Current researches have proven that Chinese Wolfberry have anti-oxidant ability, increasing immunity, anti radiation, anti aging and other health effects.

It is commonly known to have helps improve eye-sight.

Because of its benefits, Chinese vegetarian practitioneer use it widely to enhance nutritional value of their meals.

3. Bean Curd (Tofu)

Bean Curd was created by the Chinese, accidentally, in the Eastern Han dynasty. Initially, only monks and priests ate them. However, slowly it was accepted by the masses, and now, it is an indispensible ingredient for most of the Chinese meals, be it vegetarian or not.

Bean Curd is soft, tender, nutritious and affordable. It can be easily digested.

It promotes production of bodily fluid to reduce dryness. It also reduces heat and removes toxins; reduces blood cholesterol and the risk of heart diseases; and reduces respiratory and digestive problems.

You can find Bean Curd in many forms – soft, firm, dried, Bean Curd puff, Bean Curd skin (which we will see next), Jelly form, fermented Bean Curd, smelly Tofu, and many more!

Because of its wide variety, you’ll find it almost in every meal, cooked in many different methods.

4. Bean Curd Skin or Sheet

Bean Curd Skin, either in long stick form, or in sheet form, is as popular as Bean Curd.

This is because it can either be soaked and fry together with the vegetables, or cooked in soup, or in sweet soup. And the sheet form can be used for wrapping in many recipes, e.g. Wanton, Chinese vegetarian sausage etc; or even used to create the popular Chinese vegetarian duck!

Another indispensible ingredient for Chinese vegetarian meals!

5. Bean Thread

Bean Thread or Mung Bean Vermicelli which is also known as Glass Noodles, Cellophane Noodles, or Fenzi in Chinese or Fun See in Cantonese.

It is commonly used in many Asian countries, and in particular – Chinese vegetarian dishes.

Althought it is a form of noodle, and may be eaten as noodle, when these slender and gelatinous noodles are soaked, they become soft and slippery, springy and translucent. They’re almost flavorless, but they are a good absorbant which absorb the taste of their accompanying sauce or broth.

Because of that property, it is added into dishes for more bite and flavor, and is commonly found in the famour vegetarian meal – Luohan Zai (The Dish of The Arahant)

So, here you are – the 5 most commonly used ingredients which you can also use to create your own Chinese vegetarian meal today! Enjoy your meal today!

If you are already vegetarian, it may not be too difficult for you to switch to a raw vegetarian diet. This way of eating has proven to be especially healthy for many individuals, and gives you more energy to complete all the tasks you have lined up for the day. Here are some additional benefits to the diet, as well as the best places to shop to get the food you need.

One of the most affordable places to shop when you’re following a vegetarian diet plan is the supermarket. You can find all types of products there like nuts and seeds that you can use to make toppings or sauces for your entrees. You can mix up your diet by trying different fruits and vegetables that may not have been a part of your regular diet as well. This will not only keep you motivated about following a raw vegetarian diet, but will give you the variety of nutrients and vitamins that you need to be healthy and strong. For instance, you can make a fruit salad from starfruit, mangos, and papaya, instead of using more traditional fruits like apples and bananas. Natural sweeteners like agave can be used as dressing.

You can also go to farmer’s markets in your area to find the best raw food diet resources. Chances are you may even run into a recipe or two that you’ll want to try at home while you’re picking up groceries, so be on the lookout for great ideas. For instance, you can make replicas of your favorite desserts by using ground nuts and oats as pie or cheesecake crust, and a lemon juice puree to compliment your favorite fresh fruit topping can be used for a number of raw food dessert recipes.

The raw vegetarian diet has helped people to lose weight in a healthy way and is one of the easiest natural ways to burn fat off of the body. This is largely due to the fact that raw food contains a high amount of enzymes, which are building blocks of the body that are used to strengthen the function of the heart and muscles, and to enhance vision and motor skills. The body has to be fed enzymes on a daily basis in order to function properly, and raw food gives the body just what it needs for increased energy and concentration. Individuals on a raw vegetarian diet also experience less muscle and joint pain, and are able to reduce the risk of diseases like fibromyalgia and osteoporosis.

Cooking vegetarian recipes will open you to a whole world of delicious, healthy, and easy to make dishes. These vegetarian recipes are high in nutritional value, and low on fat. Cooking can cause the loss of up to 97% of water-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K. Since uncooked foods such as juices contain more vitamins and other nutrients, they are more satisfying to the body, so it does not feel starved for nutrients.

Probably one of the most perplexing thoughts a person has when they transition to vegetarianism is keeping their diet filled with a variety of fun, diverse, and nutrient-dense foods. It can sometimes feel like you’re cutting many options out since you’re no longer consuming meat, and it may seem you’re losing even more options if you’ve also decided to cut dairy and eggs from your diet as well. With a little creativity, planning, and forethought, you might be surprised how much variety you can achieve with your new vegetarian diet – perhaps even more than your meat-eating days!

Vegetarian recipes are tasty, and easy to make. You can turn any recipe into a purely vegetarian one by replacing the meats with any vegetarian alternative. Vegetarian dishes are also easier to digest and absorb, and those who eat a steady diet of vegetarian dishes tend to have less health problems than those who have all of their meals based around meat. Vegetarian recipes provide the most efficient nutriment for the human system, because plants form the basis of the food chain, closest to the source of life itself, which is solar energy. Green vegetables contain essential vitamins & minerals and are thus very beneficial for health.

Vegetarianism can be very confusing to those who are not familiar with it. But I have discovered that I feel better when I eat vegetarian meals. And contrary to popular belief, vegetarian recipes are full of the taste and enjoyment of many other foods you eat..

Vegetarian recipes provide the most efficient nutriment for the human system, because plants form the basis of the food chain, closest to the source of life itself, which is solar energy. Green vegetables contain essential vitamins & minerals and are thus very beneficial for health. Vegetable curries and usals. Salads, koshimbir and bhurta. Contrary to popular belief, preparing a quick easy vegetarian meal may be a convenient task after all.

Vegetarian recipes are included, as well as information on adapting some recipes to a vegetarian diet. Each recipe contains nutrition information per serving and even cost per serving, which many cooks find helpful. And contrary to popular belief, vegetarian recipes are full of the taste and enjoyment of many other foods you eat.

Vegetarianism isn’t just about food or health or what we put in our body we should remember that it is a lifestyle and a lifelong commitment that extends beyond the table. It extends to our own fashion to wardrobe to interior pieces and other things. The information, recipes and website links on this page are provided to help anyone begin or to increase their ability to be a vegetarian. Vegetarians have their own favorite dishes and desserts. Vegetarian diets call for fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and soybeans as a replacement for meat (which is much higher in saturated fats and much lower in fiber, antioxidants). This contributes to a healthy heart.

Indian food is different from the food of any other country. India has a great variety of foods compared to any other country. Indian cuisine varies from region to region, reflecting the varied demographics of the ethnically diverse subcontinent . Cuisine across India has also been influenced by various cultural groups that entered India throughout history, from regions as diverse as West Asia , Central Asia and Europe. Gujarati cuisine of India is predominantly vegetarian among other Indian cuisines. For pure vegetarians India is a heaven.

Indian vegetarian dishes are loaded with antioxidants. Many spices protect against cancer, heart disease, arthritis and Alzheimer’s disease. Indian vegetarian food proves all of this wrong. Indian culinary, or the art of cooking, has evolved with the times imbibing its share of various ingredients by different froeign invasions of rulers and travelers but without affecting its original identity. Therefore, whether it is North India, South India, East India, West India, the central part and the north-eastern part – each place has its own flavor of food and style of cooking.

Meatless meals are great for stretching the family food budget. In general, vegetarian cooking provides essential protein nutrients from plant sources plus dairy products, eggs and whole grains. Meat can be considered as being a vital part of the main daily meal. While meat lovers will not have a problem with this inclusion into their meal, others may.

Vegetarian cooking made simple for you. Do you find this hard to believe? Well, more and more companies are discovering innovative and more exceptional ways to provide people excellent food with no health risks involved. The following are some useful proposals to prepare simple vegetarian food.

People have a multitude of options to choose from and they may adopt a novel vegetarian lifestyle without having to forego a few of their most loved dishes. They can also hunt for recipes in order to prepare their desired food dishes. They can attempt recipes, which involve a variety of ingredients and taste differently to produce a lot more dishes they can relish. There is an overwhelming gamut of choices to select from. Vegetarian recipes are a pleasurable and interesting way to truly appreciate good food.

Vegetables form an essential component of a person’s diet. Making vegetarian recipes have a positive influence on the health of a person. They are a vital source of nutrients and vitamins. Preparing vegetarian dishes for supper can assist in reducing a person’s fat and calories intake by consuming a smaller portion of meat. Preparing vegetarian dishes also provides people the chance to reduce the threat of diseases by paying attention to the foods they consume.

For people who wish to substitute meat by going in for simple vegetarian dishes, the following tips may prove useful. People may select a plant meat option as an alternative. Vegetable burgers make a wonderful replacement option. Then there is tofu, which is a great alternative since it takes in the flavor and perfectly complements any kind of sauce. Tofu comes in two varieties, silken tofu, and fresh water filled tofu. Now, firm tofu is excellent for grilling, baking, frying and sauteing. Silken tofu is great for desserts, creamy sauces, dressings, and marinades.

Ensure that all the water is squeezed out prior to using it. A great idea would be to place a heavy weight on the tofu for around twenty minutes. Tempeh, too, is a fantastic meat substitute in vegetarian cooking. It is made out of whole soybeans that are fermented. It is advisable to braise it in a liquid to which flavor has been added, prior to cooking it, for about an hour. Once braising is done, it can be coated in cornmeal or flour and fried, adding sauce to give it more flavor. Wheat gluten or seitan is a marvelous chicken substitute. Bean products are good protein substitutes in rice dishes, stews, soups, and salads.

Simple vegetarian dishes can be picked up by attending schools that offer culinary course, thus providing people the chance to know more about vegetarian dishes or perhaps even to turn into a specialist in the culinary arena. Vegetarian cooking lessons are a fine way to have fun discovering vegetarian recipes. Vegetarian cooking lessons comprise of both general and specific subjects. Every person can opt for those classes that best suits his requirements.

Vegans don’t have to deal with boring and tasteless dishes all the time. Being a vegetarian doesn’t mean sacrificing taste for health benefits. One way to prove that the stereotype is wrong is through a vegetarian chili recipe. A vegetarian chili recipe is simply packed with both taste and health benefits.

Chili Pepper

It is not clear where chili peppers exactly came from. It is clear though that from the time of the Spanish and Portuguese explorers to this day, chili peppers have become one of the most sought after spices.

Chili peppers come from several pepper species with varying intensities of hotness and flavor. A chili pepper’s hottness can range from the slightly sweet bell pepper or from the completely mild to the extremely hot habanero. Other chili pepper types include poblano, chipotle, ancho, cayenne, tabasco and pimiento. Chili peppers get their distinct taste from the chemical capsaicin which is naturally resistant to both freezing and heat. Today, people can get their chili kick from related products like chili powder, chili oil and dried chili. Some vegetarians however would understandably still prefer fresh chili peppers for a good vegetarian chili recipe.

Health Benefits of Chili Pepper

Chili pepper aficionados would be pleased to know that chili peppers have great health benefits. One of the major benefits of a vegetarian chili recipe stems from the antioxidant content of chili peppers.

Chilies are known to have carotene and vitamin C which are potent natural antioxidants that help fight free radicals. Free radicals are rouge unpaired molecules that may build up due to oxidation and cause cell damage by stealing healthy molecules to pair with. These free radicals may be the cause of various illnesses including cancer. The vitamins in a vegetarian chili recipe neutralize free radicals by pairing with them.

Another popular health benefit that you can get from a vegetarian chili recipe is the capsaicin, a natural pain reliever. A vegetarian chili recipe with enough capsaicin can diminish substance P which is responsible for sending pain signals. Capsaicin in a pure vegetarian chili recipe can decrease the sensation of pain without making a person loose complete sensitivity.

Studies to discover more health benefits of the chili pepper are being currently undertaken. Among those health benefits tapped by experts are that chili can improve digestion and metabolism, improve appetite, decrease levels of bad cholesterol and improve blood circulation. It is also quite clear that chilies have an indirect way of managing our bodies’ sodium levels. A flavorful chili dish simply cuts our need and craving for more sodium.

Vegetarian Chili Recipe

You know how they always say that vegetarian cooking may be dangerous because of the lack of protein? Now, that no longer holds true. You can always get enough protein by combining tofu and beans in a flavor filled chili recipe. Chili however is almost always best tasting in a recipe pot that is generously filled with garlic, onions and tomatoes. You can also try a little variety by experimenting with a little red wine or natural fruit juice in a chili recipe pot.

A vegetarian weight loss regimen will consist of a balance between vegetables, fruits, nuts, or other sources of good fat which will aid in energy and feeling full. Vegetarian weight loss diets which promote heavy use of breads and pasta’s won’t bring great results. These foods generally do not promote weight loss, rather this type of vegetarian weight loss diet can prevent weight loss from occurring while actually increasing fat.

White bread and refined sugar foods should be avoided. They can stimulate insulin surges and cause people to eat more calories at future meals.

A vegetarian weight loss diet should consist of a large amount of vegetables, a medium to minimal amount of fruit, and a moderate to minimal amount of vegetarian foods that contain healthy fats such as nuts, avocados, or certain oils like flax seed.

The moderate to minimal recommendations will depend on how you individually react to fruit sugars and healthy fats. Some people do better on a vegetarian weight loss diet when they cut down a bit on their fruit intake, and instead replacing them with more vegetables.

When including grains and complex carbohydrates you should start with moderate to minimal amounts and gauge your weight loss progress, always being careful not to overeat too much of these types of carbs.

The main elements to a successful vegetarian weight loss diet are going to be a high vegetable intake, a moderate to minimal amount of fruits and a decent amount of healthy fats. There are many delicious, satisfying recipes available on the internet that center around these food combining elements.

If you want to lose some weight and at the same time considering a vegetarian diet, you will want to find a good vegetarian weight loss plan. A weight loss plan that accommodates the needs of a vegetarian is not so different to other weight loss plans. The most important feature of your diet plan is that it gives you a full range of nutrients and the least amount of calories.

When you are designing a plan for weight loss you should consider your nutritional needs first. You can choose a plan that is already designed and simply substitute any meat items on the menu for vegetarian food that is similar in its protein content and calories. You will find that the vegetarian equivalents to many meat items are very much lower in calories. What is most important is that you receive the correct amount of protein.

You can get a meal plan that is tailored to your nutritional needs, easier to follow and within your vegetarian guidelines by visiting a nutritionist. Your nutritionist will also be able to advise you on how to easily get adequate amounts of vitamins and proteins.

A good exercise routine is important for everyone no matter if they are vegetarian or not. In order to lose weight you must burn more calories than you are taking in. Your body requires a certain amount of calories to maintain your current weight, if you drop your calorie amount below that number you will lose weight. Exercise helps you get below the daily calorie amount. It can also speed up your metabolism so that your body naturally burns calories even when in a sitting position.

Whether you will succeed or fail in your weight loss goals is largely dependent on finding the proper weight loss plan. You should try to look for a plan that is low enough in calories to allow for successful weight loss, but that provides enough food so that you won’t always be hungry. The key to success is in reading nutrition fact labels carefully and designing your own weight loss plan. This maybe more difficult for you than following a previously developed plan, but it will only include foods that you enjoy and want to eat.

Just remember to drink plenty of water while you are dieting. Water is an important part of maintaining good health. It is also very helpful when you are dieting to keep you feeling full. Many times people mistake thirst for hunger and will eat when a glass of water probably would have satisfied them. It may seem odd that you could mistake these two feelings, but the signals the body will send for food or water can get mixed up.

Make sure you get all the nutrition you need when following a vegetarian weight loss plan. The goal is to get the nutrition your body needs while keeping the calories at a minimum. That is all that there is to any diet plan including vegetarian diets. Of course, sticking to your new diet is harder to do, but consuming high-quality nutrient-dense foods will make losing weight easier.

You will often here parents who are vegetarians ask the question, what effect will a vegetarian diet have on my child.

If you consider that as children grow the body is preparing itself for future life, bones and tissues are been formed, the brain is developing rapidly then it is easy to understand that the nutritional needs of a child will be much greater than the needs of adults.

Parents who choose to bring up their children as vegetarians are actively helping them grow not just physically but also morally. Nutritional research ha shown that a vegetarian diet can provide all the nutrients necessary for the development of a healthy child.

I want to focus in on the very young child, those in the 1 – 5 age bracket. At this point in its life the young child is completely dependent upon others, mainly its parents, for food.

Care must be taken to ensure that the child’s diet as regards choice is as wide as possible.

Just as with non-vegetarians there is a risk that adults will insist that children should eat this or that food. Remember children at this age can be very fussy and if they are determined to refuse a particular food they should not be forced to eat it.

Whether vegetarian or not, it is vital that children have a well balanced diet. This is particularly important during the pre-school years, as this is a time of rapid growth and development. The nutrients to particularly watch are calcium, iron, zinc, protein, vitamin B12 and vitamin D.

An advantage of starting your child off early on a vegetarian diet is that it helps form good eating habits, as likes and dislikes are formed in these early years.

As adults we aim for a diet high in fiber and low in fats but that is not what a child’s body demands Pre-school children grow very rapidly, they need lots calories (dietary energy). Diets too high in fiber or very low in fat will not provide them with sufficient concentrated energy or nutrients.

Young children should have frequent meals containing food of relatively high nutrient and energy density, although common sense must be used as children’s appetites will fluctuate on a regular basis.

Keep a ready supply of fruit, home made cake and scones within reach. It is difficult to do but try and avoid shop-bought sweets and salty snacks such as crisps.

If the child is not prone to being overweight then there are other steps you can take to increase the energy density of their food. Add vegetable oil to foods like mashed lentils or beans. Always have some fresh or frozen fruit juice or vegetable juice at hand.

Try to include as wide a variety of foods as possible, bearing in mind that children may be fussy or find some foods too strong in taste. Offer nut and seed purées such as tahini and smooth peanut butter, cheese, yoghurt, soya products, such as tofu and veggieburgers

Assessment of a child’s growth should be made over a period of time, as growth at this age is often very uneven and interspersed with sudden increases in height and weight.

A typical daily menu for an under 5 would be as follows:

Vegetables: 2 servings, preferably including leafy dark green vegetables each day.

Fruit: 1-3 servings, with dried fruit every few days or more.

Grains/cereals: 4-5 servings, including wholegrain bread, rice, pasta, breakfast cereals (and potatoes).

Pulses, Nuts and Seeds: 1-2 servings, including nut butters, tahini (sesame seed paste), lentils, mashed beans.

Dairy or Soya: 3 servings, including milk, cheese, hard-boiled free range eggs, yoghurt, fortified soya milk, tofu.

A serving will range from half a slice of bread to a few tablespoons of a vegetable.

The above should be used as a guide only. As always if you have any concerns about your child’s health consult your medical practitioner immediately.

With the rising number of health issues and ailments liked to the consumption of fats and cholesterol found in animal meat, it is no wonder why vegetarians are rapidly growing in number, in the United States alone.

Nowadays, it is estimated that one in every four person can be considered a vegetarian. Some of these people religiously follow disciplined vegetarian diets.

You might also be amazed that there are specialty restaurants that are specifically established to cater to vegetarians. Chefs also are constantly innovating and developing dishes that would help vegetarians enjoy eating.

But do these vegetarians know more about the possible vitamin deficiencies they may contract because of their exclusivity to vegetables?

Some do not know about these needs. And maybe some are simply just negligent.

Different types of vegetarians

There are four major groups of vegetarians, in relation to the kind of food they eat and the vitamins they generate from these food sources.

Vegans are those vegetarians who refuse to consume foods other than fruits, grains, vegetables, nuts and seeds. Vegans are particularly noteworthy because they do not intend to consume even eggs and dairy products. Thus, vegans’ vitamins and nutrients needs are consisting of calcium, protein, iron and Vitamin B12.

Lacto-vegetarians are like vegans, except that they consume low-fat and processed milk, eggs and other dairy products. Thus, the vitamin needs of these vegetarians are narrowed to only Vitamin B12 since dairies are rich in protein, calcium and iron.

Lacto-ovo-vegetarians are like lacto-vegetarians. But these groups of vegetarians do not limit their dairy foods intake to low-fat. They consume even the fresh and high-fat dairy products. Vitamin needs of these vegetarians are like those of the lacto-vegetarians.

Semi-vegetarians are people who eat chicken and fish but not other types of meat like beef, lamb and pork. Thus, these vegetarians’ vitamins needs are far lower compared to their other counterparts since they can assimilate more vitamins from wider food sources.

Vegetarians’ vitamin need

The principal aim of vegetarians is to drastically cut, if not eliminate, the absorption of fats from food to prevent cholesterol build up that leads to obesity, hypertension, heart ailments, strokes and a host of other diseases.

But by doing so, they compromise their bodies assimilation of other vitamins and nutrients needed for better functioning. Thus, experts note that most vegetarians experience mild to severe deficiencies to some nutrients, minerals and vitamins.

Most vegetarians need more vitamin B12. This is because this vitamin is particularly found only in animal meat. However, to meet the vegetarian’s needs for this vitamin, they can resort to eating breakfast cereals, brewers’ yeast and soy beverages.

Because vegetarians’ vitamin supplies are somehow made limited, they are also subjected to vitamin D deficiency. The need for this vitamin can be satisfied by exposure to direct sunlight because vitamin D is synthesized by the body’s skin.

Zinc is a mineral that most vegetarians need more. That is because this is much needed for improved growth among teenagers.

Protein is one nutrient that can only be found mostly in dairy products. But the strict vegetarians’ needs for protein can be met by consuming soy products, which are the only plant-sourced food to contain as much protein as dairies.

Plan your diet

Experts and dieticians advise that before you subject yourself to any vegetarianism diet practices, you must first research about them. Get to know the potential vitamin needs that might miss by avoiding several foods.

If you are a vegetarian and your vitamin needs are still not met, consult your doctor to ask about vitamin supplements suited for you.

Remember, vegetarianism is good, but you need to source out those vitamins you need from other sources if you want to maximize the dietary discipline’s results.

If you are a meat-eater with some vegetarian guests coming round for a barbecue, it is very easy to rustle up some tasty vegetarian food. There are also some more challenging options for the vegetarian host or the brave carnivore!Option number one for vegetarians is to cook some shop-bought veggie burgers or sausages. If it’s a ‘bring your own meat’ barbecue this is probably what vegetarians will bring. Now, some people hate meat substitutes, but most vegetarians quite like them, and will be quite happy with a veggie sausage, particularly with some good relish and salad in a bun.
However, there are lots of other things you can cook for vegetarians which will be a little more impressive – and more than likely the meat-eaters will like them too. Halloumi cheese is always popular, and very easy to cook. This is a firm cheese that doesn’t melt when cooked, so you can slice it, or cube it and stick it on skewers, and cook over the barbecue until browned on the outside, and soft on the inside. If cooking on skewers, you could alternate cubes of halloumi with cooked new potatoes.

Grilled vegetables are another good option, as they really taste of ‘barbecue’. For something slightly unusual, try brushing thick asparagus spears with olive oil and grilling for about 5 minutes, until browned in places. You can also easily grill aubergine or sweet potato slices (1-2 cm) or courgettes (halved lengthways), having coated them in olive oil and seasoning. You can also grill whole aubergines on the barbecue, having pierced them in several places with a fork. When they are soft you can scoop out the inside and spread it on some bread, or use it to make an aubergine dip.

Wrapping vegetables in foil prevents charring, so is useful if your vegetables tend to burn on the outside but are raw inside. For an authentic barbecue taste though, it is a good idea to cook for a few minutes without foil at the end, until it looks char-grilled. This is one way of cooking corn on the cob, an essential part of any barbecue for meat-eaters and vegetarians.

Lots of other vegetables, such as mushrooms, peppers and onions, work well on a barbecue, but can be quite fiddly to work with. The classic option is to thread vegetable pieces on to skewers to make vegetable kebabs. A quicker way is to use a barbecue ‘wok’ or grill pan (try Lakeland), which you can place on top of the barbecue and keep all your vegetable pieces together. Then you can easily cook smaller vegetables without them falling through onto the barbecue, while retaining that barbecue flavour. This is also a simple way of keeping vegetarian food separate from meat.

A good accompaniment for all your guests is to brush some slices of baguette or ciabatta with olive oil and seasoning, and grill on each side until golden brown. If you wrap a whole garlic bulb in foil and barbecue until the cloves are soft, you can squeeze the roasted garlic out of the cloves and spread it on the bread. Garlic roasted like this becomes much milder and sweeter.

For the really ambitious, why not try making your own veggie burgers? Then you can have complete control over the ingredients and will feel very satisfied with your creativity. There are loads of recipes for different kinds of veggie burgers, but typically you could use mashed beans or lentils as a base, and add any kind of cheese, chopped onions, nuts, herbs or spices for flavouring, breadcrumbs to help make it a bit more solid, and beaten egg to help bind it. Then simply grill it! You may have to experiment to get a burger that doesn’t fall apart too easily – if you are worried, start by cooking it on foil or a baking sheet, and finish up with a few minutes directly on the barbecue.
